Mhembero Dance Troupe

Mhembero is the Shona word for celebration! Founded by artisitc director Irene Chigamba in 1984, Mhenbero Dance Troupe has been thrilling audiences around the world for almost 20 years. Striving to preserve and promote Zimbabwean cultureal identity, Mhenbero performaces weave an exciting mixture of traditional music and dance, including mbira (thumb piano), marimbas (wooden xylophones), ngoma (drums), hosho (gourd rattles), and traditional dances from the eight provinces and many tribes of Zimbabwe.

Based in Harare, Zimbabwe, Mhembero is a fifteen-member ensemble that was originally formed to keep Zimbabwean culture intact. Under the direction of Irene Chigamba, a former member of the Zimbabwean National Dance Company, Mhenbero has since built a sound reputation in the traditional entertainnment world. As ambassadors of Zimbabwean culture, they have been called upon to represent Zimbabwe regionally and internationally. Mhembero has performed for audiences ranging from government officials and foreign digintaries to local communities and school children in an effort to build appreciation for Zimbabwean culture. A vibrant collection of artists, Mhembero features both the wisdom and knowledge of verteran performs while incorporating the development of youthful talent, continuing to pass down Zimbabwe's vital cultural traditions.


The traditional music and dance of Zimbabwe reveals a devotion to the celebraton of life, the bringing together of people and the honring of ancestros, while teaching valuable moral and cultural lessons to the greater community. It is his ancient wisdom that heals and holds famiies and communities intact despite te contrary conditions of the modern world.
Mhembero Dance Troupe welcomes the new millennium with resolve and determination to maintain the traditions of the Zimbawean people and to preserve and nurture the Shona cultural identity.
